IIT Guwahati opens admissions for MTech in flood, water resources; no GATE score required

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has opened applications for its MTech programme in flood and water resources management. Eligible candidates can apply for the 2-year master course through the official website at iitg.ac.in by July 15.

The hybrid-mode based MTech degree course is designed for working professionals and graduates seeking to enhance their skills on flood and water resources management

The engineering institute will commence the online classes from August 10. The degree programme will conduct the laboratory experiments and the final exam on IIT Guwahati campus.

IIT Guwahati MTech Flood and Water Resources: Eligibility

“It is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and applied skills to address complex challenges related to water scarcity, climate variability, and sustainable development,” IIT Guwahati said in an official statement.

Notably, candidates do not need a Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score to apply for the MTech programme. They will be admitted through a written test and interview.

Hemant B Kaushik, dean, outreach education and skilling, IIT Guwahati, said: “With increasing challenges due to floods, climate variability, and growing demands on water resources, the need for skilled professionals in flood and water resources management has never been greater. This degree program at IIT Guwahati provides a unique opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and practical expertise to address these critical challenges and contribute towards sustainable water management.”

As per the eligibility criteria, working professionals with at least one-year experience in the water resources sector can apply.

Candidates must also have a four-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent in civil, agricultural engineering or allied discipline with at least 60% marks or 6.0 CGPI.

MTech programme follows trimester-based system

The 2-year MTech programme follows a trimester-based system, with each term having 12 weeks of instructions and the course duration can be extended up to 5 years, the institute said.

The curriculum for the flood and water resources management programme will prepare graduates to develop data-driven solutions for flood risk assessment, and climate adaptation strategies across diverse hydrological and socio-economic contexts, it added.

It also includes multi-entry and exit options for candidates. “Throughout the program, the students will be able to visit IIT Guwahati campus to connect with experts, gain hands-on training in various relevant fields, and receive support from faculty members for their project work,” it said.

The programme will allow candidates to exit at different stages with recognised certifications such as those completing 4 courses or 2 to 3 trimesters will be given PG certificate in basics in flood and water resources management.

Candidates completing 7 courses or 3 to 6 trimesters will be awarded with a PG diploma certificate. Whereas, those who complete 10 courses or 4 to 10 trimesters will gain a master of science (engineering) certificate.

“After completion of all courses and Capstone projects (6 – 15 Trimesters) - MTech in Flood and Water Resources Management

Students who exit at PG Certificate, Diploma, or Master of Science degree stage can rejoin after a one-year gap to continue their education,” IIT Guwahati said.
