IIT Kanpur hosts Judgment and Decision Making India conference

Representatives at Judgment and Decision Making conference at IIT Kanpur discussed topics such as neuroeconomics, rationality, nudges, perception.
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kanpur) is hosting the ‘Judgment and Decision Making (JDM) India’ conference with focus on basic cognitive neural processes. The conference is being co-convened and hosted by Arjun Ramakrishnan, a neuroscientist and decision researcher at IIT Kanpur, and Sumitava Mukherjee, a decision researcher and behavioural scientist at IIT Delhi.
The representative at the conference discussed the processes involved in decision-making and on applied aspects that are crucial in various areas of life, business, and society. The conference covered topics such as controlled lab experiments and on-field studies.
Research works in fields such as neuroeconomics, behavioural economics, rationality, nudges, perception and measurement of risk, artificial intelligence and algorithmic decisions were discussed. Speakers from several countries spoke on the topics related to human thinking as well as animal cognition.
The conference was marked by addresses by faculty members, a dedicated panel for PhD candidates, and a showcase of undergraduate research works, ensuring that researchers at various stages of their careers had a platform to share their valuable work.
The conference marked a substantial stride in recognising the necessity to bring together researchers and professionals with a shared interest in decision-making.
The keynote speakers at the conference were Barbara Mellers, George I Heyman University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and Arvind Sahay, Director of Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon. Emeritus Professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, Jon Baron, who is a;lso the founder editor of the journal Judgment and Decision Making gave the concluding address.

IIT Kanpur director S Ganesh said, “Judgment and decision-making play a pivotal role in shaping outcomes across diverse sectors including health, education, governance, policy, marketing, and businesses. Hosting this conference at IIT Kanpur is a source of great pride.”
