Both initiatives will offer personalised academic support, competitive exam preparation for students, particularly those from rural and economically disadvantaged backgrounds
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT) Kharagpur has launched a free artificial intelligence (AI) based tutor and an online preparation platform for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM). Both the initiatives will help students get personalised learning support and help them prepare for competitive examinations without paying for additional coaching.
Talking about India's educational future, Sukanta Majumdar said, “The true power of Artificial Intelligence lies not in providing instant answers, but in nurturing the ability of young minds. Aligned with the vision of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and the National Education Policy 2020, it brings quality academic support closer to every learner, whether in a metropolitan city or a remote village.
He added that technology should support teachers, improve students’ understanding of concepts and ensure equal learning opportunities regardless of their location or financial circumstances. He also congratulated IIT Kharagpur and the Fermi team for promoting independent thinking and helping students for the future of Viksit Bharat.
As part of the institute’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the platforms were launched by Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State for Education, on October 12, 2026, at the IIT Kharagpur Research Park in Rajarhat, Kolkata. Suman Chakraborty, IIT Kharagpur Director and other academicians, faculty members and students attended the event.

NDLI-FERMI AI tutor offers guided learning
IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with Fermi AI, has made the NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor available through the National Digital Library of India (NDLI), which is an initiative supported by the Ministry of Education.
The tool will help students understand the concepts instead of just giving them answers. NDLI-FERMI AI Tutor uses guided questions, hints and explanations to encourage learners to independently solve problems.
Through its ‘Scan & Ask’ feature, students can solve questions in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. The tool will also help them identify mistakes, understand difficult topics and improve their problem-solving skills. Registered NDLI users can access the AI tutor through the library’s website free of charge.

IIT Kharagpur: Free online preparation for GATE, JAM
The second initiative will arrange online preparation resources for students who are appearing for GATE and JAM. The platform will make examination preparation easy majorly for students from rural areas and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. By providing free learning support, IIT Kharagpur plans to reduce students’ dependence on costly coaching services and help more aspirants in their higher education opportunities.
Highlighting the importance of the initiatives, Suman Chakraborty said: “India's educational future must be built on a simple but powerful principle: excellence should never be limited by access. As the country's first IIT celebrates its Platinum Jubilee, we believe our responsibility extends far beyond our classrooms and campus.
He added that the initiatives will expand access to learning resources and academic support for students across India, irrespective of their location or financial background.
