IIT Madras, Birmingham University launch joint MA in Sustainable Energy Systems

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and the University of Birmingham launches a new Joint Masters programme in Sustainable Energy Systems. As per the institute, the programme offers students the flexibility to complete their studies at either IIT Madras or Birmingham. The applications for this programme will be available from May 6 to June 2, 2024.

To get enrolled in this programme, candidates will have to appear in an online test followed by an interview. The online test is scheduled to be held on June 14 and interviews will be conducted from June 18 to 21. The offer letters are scheduled to be sent out from June 26, 2024

Students will study in both Chennai and Birmingham before receiving a joint degree from both universities. They will also carry out a research project with internationally recognized research groups, the institute said.

Eligibility

Indian candidates can check the eligibility criteria for this programme provided below.

• Candidates should hold a bachelor's degree of three or four years in duration from a recognised university in India.

• Candidates with a Bachelor's degree are expected to have scored 55% - 60% or higher for equivalency to a 2:1, or 50% - 55% for equivalency to a 2:2, based on the awarding institution's criteria.

English language criteria:

The minimum language proficiency requirements are as follows:

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum overall score of 6.0, with at least 5.5 in each component, and a minimum score of 6.0 in the writing component.

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A minimum overall score of 80, with no less than 19 in reading, 19 in listening, 21 in speaking, and 21 in writing.

As per the institute, the programme will begin with students studying at IIT Madras and completing an industrial placement. Students then have the option of two pathways:

• Option 1: Study in the United Kingdom (UK) for 12 months including a research project in Birmingham.

• Option 2: Study in the UK for six months, then return to IIT Madras to complete the program and carry out a research project at IIT Madras.

Speaking about this programme, the dean of IIT Madras, Raghunathan Rengaswamy, said: “IIT Madras is thrilled to start this new programme in collaboration with the University of Birmingham close on the heels of the first successful joint program on data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).”
