IIT Madras ocean engineering dept turns 50, eyes blue economy, clean energy future

The department of ocean engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has completed 50 years, marking a significant milestone in its longstanding contribution to India’s maritime sector and coastal development. Over the decades, the department has built a strong reputation in ocean research, naval architecture and infrastructure support, playing a quiet but crucial role in several national projects.

Looking ahead, the department is aligning its work with India’s growing push towards the blue economy, deep ocean exploration and sustainable port development. It is now focusing on emerging areas such as offshore renewable energy, including wave-based systems, as well as using artificial intelligence and data-driven tools to improve research and real-world applications.

The department’s work has extended beyond academics into impactful, on-ground projects. It has contributed to coastal protection efforts and supported key environmental restoration initiatives. Notably, its involvement in the revival of vaan island in the gulf of mannar helped protect fragile marine ecosystems.

Similarly, its research inputs at chilika lake in Odisha played a role in improving the lake’s ecological balance, boosting fish populations and supporting biodiversity. The team has also worked on solutions to reduce coastal erosion, including artificial reef systems in Puducherry, and developed innovative methods to manage water resources, such as preventing seawater intrusion in the palar river.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Abdus Samad, head, department of ocean engineering, IIT Madras, said, “As India works toward ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, the Department of Ocean Engineering is committed to strengthening research, education and innovation in maritime technologies while supporting the Nation’s growing Blue Economy and sustainable ocean development.”

IIT Madras: Strong Industry Links and Global Reach

The department continues to collaborate with major national agencies like the Indian Navy and ISRO, contributing to advancements in maritime and space-related technologies. It has also been involved in projects such as the vizhinjam international seaport.

With modern research facilities, including a large wave basin and ship simulation systems, the department is well-equipped for future challenges. To mark its Golden Jubilee, IIT Madras will host a series of conferences, workshops and alumni events throughout the year, bringing together experts from across the world.
