IIT Madras starts sports quota-based admission for BTech programmes; eligibility

IIT Madras Sports-Based UG Admission: The institute is accepting applications for 2 seats per department, of which half are for female students
NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) recently announced the start of 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) for the academic year 2024-2025. The institute will provide two supernumerary seats in each of its undergraduate programmes for Indian nationals, one of which will be reserved specifically for female students.
IIT Madras is the country's first IIT to provide sports-based admissions. The admission procedure through SEA, mandates that a student qualifies JEE (Advanced). However, unlike the conventional Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal, the admission process for SEA will be facilitated through a distinct portal managed by IIT Madras. This IIT Madras sports -based admission portal was inaugurated on June 11, 2024.
IIT Madras Sports-Based Admission: Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for admission to IIT Madras through SEA, candidates are required to fulfill the following criteria:
- They must secure a position in either the Common Rank List (CRL) or the category-wise rank list in the JEE (Advanced). This position can be in any of the categories for which rank lists are prepared.
- Candidates are required to achieve the minimum required marks in their Class 12 examinations, as specified in the eligibility criteria for IITs outlined in Clause 11 of the Information Brochure (IB) for JEE (Advanced) 2024.
- Additionally, candidates are required to have earned at least one medal in sports achievements over the past four years, from any national or international-level competitions.

IIT Madras BTech Admission 2024: Sports rank list
A distinct Sports Rank List (SRL) will be compiled, evaluating candidates based on their performance in a specified list of sports detailed in Appendix - C. Seat allocation will rely solely on the SRL. However, inclusion in the SRL does not guarantee admission.

IIT Madras Sports Excellence-Based Admissions: Tie-breaking criteria
- In case candidates have the same points, the following tiebreaking criterion will be used.
- Candidates with higher points at international level will be prioritized more seat allocation.
- In case of a tie at the international level, points achieved at the national level will be used for seat allotment.
- In case of a tie at both international and national levels, seats will be offered to all the candidates with tie by creating additional supernumerary seats.
Speaking about the sports-based admission, V Kamakoti, director, IIT Madras, said, “Sports not only teaches youth to maintain good health and disciplined life but also the mental maturity to handle success and failures, and how to transform failures to success with perseverance and hard work. Sports quota will ensure presence of youth with these qualities in our campus who will be role models for other children.”
