Implement reservation policy in National Law Universities: AIOBC general secretary

NEW DELHI: Member of Tamil Nadu Government Social Justice Monitoring Committee and All India Other Backward Classes (AIOBC) Federation general secretary G Karunanidhy wrote a letter asking OBC commissions, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) commissions and other social organisations to exert pressure on state governments to implement reservation policy for the OBC, SC and ST communities in the National Law Universities across different states.

Karunanidhy pointed out that many states are denying reservations to OBC, SC and ST in National Law Schools. "It is unfortunate that Bihar state headed by Thiru. Nitish Kumar having associated with social justice movement did not implement OBC reservation," he wrote. He also pointed out the case of NLU Trichy, where the reservation policy was not being implemented till 2021-22. AIOBC Employee Federation took the matter to Tail Nadu chief minister MK Stalin and law minister S Reghupathy, and as a result the government directed the NLU Trichy registrar to implement the 69percent reservation policy.

All 22 National Law Universities in India, except he one in Delhi are members of the consortium, and are supposed to admit students on the basis of the CLAT marks . There is no intervention from the Union government in the admission process and application of reservation policy. However, the state governments have the authority to decide and implement the reservation. Karunanidhy said that the state governments have the resposibility in ensuring that the reservation for the OBC, SC and ST communities are implemented to the minimum extend of 27 percent, 15 percent and 7.5 percent respectively. According to him, since there is no provisions to fix accountability, many officials at the helm of such institutions are prone to violate the law, ithas to be checked immediately.
