JEE Main 2026: How percentile is calculated

In JEE Main 2026, raw marks are converted into percentiles using a standard formula that considers how many candidates scored equal to or less than a particular candidate in a shift. This process scales scores between 0 and 100, reducing discrepancies caused by different question paper difficulties. It is important to note that percentile is not the same as percentage, and it is calculated up to seven decimal places to avoid ties and ensure accurate ranking.

April 21, 2026 | 09:30 PM IST

JEE Main 2026: Why percentile scores differ across shifts

Percentile variations across shifts often raise questions among candidates. These differences occur due to variations in the number of candidates and the difficulty level of each shift. For example, the lowest percentile depends on how many candidates appeared in that shift, while the highest scorer is always awarded a 100 percentile. To maintain fairness, the NTA applies a common cut-off percentile across shifts so that no candidate is disadvantaged due to a tougher paper.

JEE Main 2026: Understanding the normalisation process

The normalisation process in JEE Main 2026 ensures fairness across multiple exam shifts. Since candidates receive question papers of varying difficulty levels, the National Testing Agency converts raw marks into percentile scores. This method ensures that no candidate is unfairly advantaged or disadvantaged. Percentile scores indicate a candidate’s relative performance within their shift, with the top scorer in each shift receiving a 100 percentile. These normalised scores, not raw marks, are used to prepare the final merit list and All India Rank.

JEE Mains 2026 Percentile System: How NTA ensures fair ranking across multiple shifts

The JEE Main percentile system 2026 is designed to ensure fairness despite varying question paper difficulty. A percentile score measures how many candidates a student outperformed within the same shift. For example, a 99.5 percentile means outperforming 99.5% of candidates who attempted the same paper. This ensures that each shift is evaluated independently, preventing any unfair advantage or disadvantage due to paper difficulty. NTA then combines these percentiles to create a unified merit list for admissions.

JEE Main 2026 Normalisation: 99 percentile needs 165–196 marks across shifts

The JEE Main 2026 normalisation process highlights why raw marks vary significantly across shifts. Data from Session 2 shows that the marks required for the 99 percentile ranged from 165 in the toughest shift to 196 in the easiest, a gap of 31 marks. Similar variations were seen at the 98 and 97 percentiles as well. This clearly reflects differences in paper difficulty across multiple exam days. Experts say such variation is expected in large-scale exams like JEE, reinforcing the need for percentile-based scoring instead of raw marks.

JEE Main 2026 Normalisation: Why percentiles differ across shifts

Many candidates often question why percentile scores vary across shifts in JEE Main 2026. The variation arises because each shift has a different number of candidates and difficulty level. For instance, the lowest percentile differs since it depends on the total number of candidates in that shift. Similarly, the highest scorer in every shift is always assigned 100 percentile, regardless of raw marks. To maintain fairness, NTA considers the lowest common cut-off percentile across shifts, ensuring that no candidate is penalised due to tougher question papers.

JEE Main 2026 Percentile Formula: Marks to score conversion

In JEE Main 2026, raw scores are transformed into percentiles using a standard formula to ensure comparability across shifts. The percentile is calculated based on the number of candidates who scored equal to or less than a candidate in a particular shift. This method scales scores between 0 and 100, helping eliminate discrepancies caused by varying paper difficulty. Importantly, percentile is not the same as percentage marks, and it is calculated up to seven decimal places to minimise ties and ensure precise ranking in the final result.

JEE Main 2026: Normalisation process

The JEE Main 2026 normalisation process plays a crucial role in maintaining fairness across multiple exam shifts. Since candidates receive different question papers with varying difficulty levels, the National Testing Agency (NTA) converts raw marks into percentile scores. This ensures that no student is unfairly advantaged or disadvantaged. The percentile reflects how a candidate performed relative to others in the same shift, with the top scorer in each shift receiving 100 percentile. These normalised scores—not raw marks—are used to prepare the final merit list and All India Rank.

JEE Mains 2026: College predictor helps aspirants assess BTech admission chances

With the declaration of JEE Mains 2026 session 2 results, over 11 lakh candidates are now preparing for the next crucial step—college admissions. The Careers360 JEE Main College Predictor tool has emerged as a useful resource for students aiming to secure seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. By analysing previous years’ cut-offs and admission trends, the tool provides a personalised list of colleges based on a candidate’s rank, percentile, category, and preferences. While it simplifies decision-making, aspirants should remember that final admissions will depend on JoSAA counselling, seat availability, and official merit rankings.

JEE Main 2026: College predictor tools

As JoSAA counselling approaches, students are increasingly relying on the JEE Main 2026 college predictor to plan their BTech admissions strategically. The tool requires key inputs such as percentile, rank, home state, and category to generate realistic college options aligned with past trends. It helps candidates shortlist institutions like NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Surathkal, and IIIT Hyderabad, which consistently rank among the top engineering colleges. However, experts advise using predictor tools as guidance rather than final confirmation, as actual allotments will depend on dynamic factors like seat matrix, competition level, and choice filling during counselling.
