NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday met Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) vice chancellor Najma Akhtar and congratulated her for the university’s achievements. During the meeting, the JMI VC requested the President to grant permission for setting up a medical college, offshore campuses and additional faculty positions.
A medical college at JMI will not only be helpful for people living in South Delhi but will also be useful for the people living in nearby cities in UP and Haryana, the university said in a statement.
Akhtar informed the President that the university wants to set-up a Department of Tribal Studies and Development and a hostel for tribal students and sought her help for the same.
Additionally, the institute is also planning to establish a Department of Modern Indian Languages, a nursing college and a Faculty of Alternative Medicine at JMI.

Najma Akhtar briefed the President that JMI was granted A++ accreditation by NAAC in 2021, for a period of 5 years, and it is among the top three universities of the country as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the ministry of education. Stating that the university has made significant improvements in international rankings like QS, Times Higher Education (THE) etc, she requested the President to grant ‘Institute of Eminence’ status.
She also invited the President for the upcoming convocation of the university, as per the official statement.
She further briefed her about JMI’s Residential Coaching Academy (RCA), which provides coaching for various competitive examinations, adding that this year’s IAS exam topper Shruti Sharma was a student of the academy.
Claiming that the academic course provided by JMI is of great demand among Indian students residing in other countries, she requested for approval to set up JMI offshore campuses. Due to increase in the number of academic programmes offered by the university, Najma Akhtar also requested her for additional teaching and non-teaching positions in the university.
