JNU PhD Admission 2025: Application deadline extended again; apply by July 22 at jnu.ac.in

JNU Admission 2025: The first PhD merit list will be out on August 11, with pre-enrolment and seat blocking scheduled from August 11 to 13.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has again extended the deadline for online submission of application forms for admission to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes for the academic year 2025-26. As per the latest notification, candidates can now apply for the JNU PhD admission till 2025 till July 22 though the official website at jnu.ac.in.
The university is inviting applications for PhD admission from candidates who have qualified in the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), hold a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
Admission to PhD programmes in the School of engineering will be based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score. For preparing the merit list, 70 per cent weightage will be given to the GATE score and 30 per cent to the performance in the viva-voce. Initially, the last date to apply for the JNU PhD programme admission was July 7, which was later extended to July 14.

JNU PhD Admission 2025: First merit list on August 11
Indian students accepting admission offers through the pre-enrolment portal will have to pay Rs 325 for PhD programmes. For PhD admission in the School of Engineering, the online payment has been set at Rs 20,545.
According to the official schedule, invitations for viva-voce will be sent to candidates by July 18, 2025, tentatively. The viva-voce examination is expected to be held from July 25 to July 31. The first merit list for PhD admissions is scheduled to be published on August 11. Pre-enrolment registration and payment of fees, along with seat blocking for candidates selected in the first list, will take place from August 11 to August 13. Physical verification of admission and registration for candidates in the first list is tentatively scheduled from August 18 to August 21.
Meanwhile, the university administration has extended hostel facilities for PhD scholars in the final stages of completing their thesis. Students seeking an extension are required to submit an undertaking signed by their supervisor, the chairperson and the dean of their respective school.
On the student front, the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) is staging a hunger strike demanding the reinstatement of the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) for all PhD courses. The union has also extended support to candidates who were left out of the ongoing admission process despite having appeared for the UGC NET held in June 2025.
