The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has published the JoSAA round 1 seat allotment results, and candidates have to confirm their seats by June 26. Students can check their JoSAA round 1 seat allotment result on the official website, josaa.nic.in.

The last date for JoSAA round 1 seat confirmation fee payment is June 26.

The JoSAA counselling process includes registration, choice filling, mock allotment, seat allotment, document verification and fee payment. After every allotment round, candidates are required to choose options such as ‘freeze’, ‘float’ or ‘slide’ to confirm or upgrade their allotted seats.

JoSAA conducts the centralised counselling process for admissions to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIITs, and other GFTIs based on JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks.

As candidates prepare for choice filling and seat allotment rounds, understanding JoSAA counselling-related terms has become important to avoid mistakes during engineering admissions.

JoSAA counselling 2026

Here are some of the important JoSAA counselling terms explained.

Freeze option

Candidates selecting the ‘freeze’ option accept the allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further JoSAA counselling rounds. Once frozen, the seat is locked permanently and cannot be changed later.

Float option

The ‘float’ option allows candidates to keep the allotted seat while remaining eligible for better course or college options in upcoming rounds. Candidates choosing float can be upgraded to any higher preferred choice across engineering colleges.

Slide option

Candidates selecting ‘slide’ accept the allotted engineering college but seek a better branch within the same college in subsequent rounds. They will not be considered for seat upgrades in other engineering colleges.

Opening and closing ranks

JoSAA releases opening and closing ranks after every counselling round. The opening rank refers to the rank at which admission starts for a particular course and institute, while the closing rank indicates the last rank at which admission is granted. These cut-offs help candidates estimate engineering admission chances in future rounds.

Mock allotment

Before final seat allotment, JoSAA conducts mock allotments to help candidates understand their probable seat allocation based on submitted choices. Candidates can modify or reorder preferences after JoSAA mock allotment results.

Seat acceptance fee

Candidates allotted seats should pay the seat acceptance fee and upload the required documents within the deadline to continue in the JoSAA counselling process. Failure to complete these steps may lead to cancellation of the allotted seat.

Choice locking

Candidates are required to save and lock their preferred institute and programme choices before the deadline. Once locked, changes are generally not allowed in later rounds.
