Karnataka government has approved the appointment of 40,000 guest teachers in primary schools and 11,000 in high schools against vacant teaching posts.
The Karnataka government has approved the appointment of 51,000 guest teachers in government primary and high schools across the state for the academic year 2026-27. The objective behind the appointment of temporary school teachers is to safeguard students’ academic interests.
The decision comes a day after the Karnataka government reached out to the department of school education to retain 6,086 guest lecturers appointed for government pre-university colleges (PUC) for the 2026-27 academic year.
According to an official notice, 40,000 guest teachers will be appointed in government primary schools and 11,000 in government high schools against vacant teaching posts.

The appointments will remain valid until permanent teachers are recruited or until the end of the academic year, whichever is earlier, the notice reads.
The government, in its official order, said that the measure has been taken to ensure uninterrupted educational activities from the beginning of the academic year, as schools are scheduled to reopen in May 2026 under the department’s uniform academic guidelines.
“In view of the vacant teaching posts in the schools on the day of the commencement of the school, it is necessary to recruit guest teachers temporarily in the interest of the students in order to overcome the shortage of teachers until the appointment of permanent teachers or until the end of the academic year, whichever is earlier,” the notice said.
To address this issue, the School Education Department, Bangalore proposed continuing the guest teacher model implemented during the 2025-26 academic year.
