Kerala board revises SSLC, HSLC grace marks for sports, services; new rules

Download NowNEW DELHI: The Kerala Board of Public Examination (KBPE) has made changes to its grace mark policy for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) class 12 and Higher Secondary (HSLC) examinations, as reported by the Indian Express.

Under the revised rules, the KBPE has increased the limit of grace marks to students under various categories and the highest grace marks for participants in state-level sports, arts events have been increased from 10 to 15 marks, as per the report.
“National-level participants will now receive up to 20 marks, up from the previous 15. These marks will be distributed proportionately across subjects, as earlier,” the report said.

In addition, Kerala SSLC has also made changes for NCC and Scout & Guide cadets, as per the report, published by the Indian Express. “Previously capped at 5 marks, the maximum grace marks have now been doubled to 10. Similarly, students with approved participation in science fairs and IT fairs can now claim up to 10 grace marks instead of the earlier 5,” it added.
As per the official notice by the General Education Department, the revised changes aimed to acknowledge the increasing competitiveness and effort involved in these extracurricular activities.
The order also clarifies that the grace marks should be applied only for eligibility and not for improving grades, the official notice reads. “This means students can use them to pass a subject or exam but not to increase their grade from, say, B to A. The total maximum grace marks that a student can avail of across all categories remains subject to the 30-mark cap,” the report said.
