KVS Admissions 2022-23: Plea in Delhi HC challenging age criteria for Class 1 admission

NEW DELHI: A petition has been filed in Delhi High Court challenging the Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Class 1 admission criteria 2022-23 laying down the minimum age of a child as 6 years instead of 5.

As per the guidelines, the age limit for KVS admission 2022 for Class 1 , “A child must be 6 years old as on March 31 in the academic year in which admission is sought for Class 1. A child born on April 1 should also be considered.”

The petition sought the Delhi High Court’s intervention and direction to Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) to reframe the KV admission criteria 2022, the ANI reported.

The petition said that the minimum age for KV Class 1 admission was 5 years as of March 31 prior to this academic year. The plea said that the impugned admission criteria of the respondent KVS is arbitrary, discriminatory, unjust, unreasonable, violative of the fundamental right to education of petitioner as granted to her under Articles 14, 21 and 21-A of the Constitution of India read with the provisions of Delhi School Education Act, 1973, and Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, the report said.

The petitioner, a child through his father Pawan Kumar, submitted the plea and said that she will be 5 years plus as of March 31. She claimed that the KVS had changed the admission criteria for Class 1 on February 24, just four days before the admission process began.

However, as per the guidelines, “There is no age restriction for admission to Class 11 provided the student is seeking admission in the year of passing Class 10 examination. Similarly, there will be no upper and lower age limit for admission to Class 12 provided there has been no break in the continuous study of the student after passing Class 11,” the KVS said.
