Maharashtra: Exams cancelled for final-year university students

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra’s chief minister, Uddhav Thackeray announced late on Sunday that the examinations for final-year university students in the state were cancelled. Instead, students will be awarded aggregate marks based on their performance in the previous semesters for that academic year.

Uddhav Thackeray, on the last day of lockdown 4, announced that the lockdown has been extended till June 30. He said that the state will have no choice but to promote final-year students based on their performance of the previous semester and academic year.

The decision to promote students has been taken as it is risky for students to come together for exams during the coronavirus pandemic. Thackeray tweeted: “I held a meeting of Vice-Chancellors yesterday regarding final year college exams. They unanimously said that the present circumstances do not allow for examinations to be held immediately as it is risky for lakhs of students to come together for exams.”

So, we have decided that students will get aggregate marks based on their performance in the previous semesters for that academic year. This is because there is no clarity on when the exams can be held. The future of students should not be kept hanging because of this.

Mumbai University, aggregate marks

Careers360 had earlier reported that Mumbai University students have been agitating for the cancellation of exams for weeks.

Thackeray also announced that the state government has decided that students will get aggregate marks based on their performance in the previous semesters for that academic year. “This is because there is no clarity on when the exams can be held. The future of students should not be kept hanging because of this,” Thakerey tweeted.

However, if a student wants to appear for the final exams to improve their previous performance, they will be given an opportunity in September, October or November, based on how the situation evolves.

Maharashtra is one of the worst-hit states with coronavirus pandemic, with 67,655 cases reported till date by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

Earlier last week, Union Human Resource Development Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ during a webinar with the heads of over 45,000 higher educational institutions announced that the universities will be conducting the examination of only the final year students. First and second-year students will be promoted based on internal assessments.
