Maharashtra Public Service Commission removes optional subjects from Mains exams from 2027

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has announced the scrapping of optional subject from the State Services Main Examination, effective from 2027. The objective to remove the optional subject is to introduce a more uniform and standardised evaluation system for state civil services aspirants.

The decision was taken after reviewing the existing MPSC exam pattern and considering the revision made by several other state public service commissions across the country, as per the official notice.

Notably, following the development in the MPSC examination from 2027, candidates will have to attempt seven compulsory papers, including Marathi, English, Essay and four General Studies papers, the notification read.

“The Public Service Commissions of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar etc. in the country have excluded optional/optional subject from their State Services Main Examination system and have instead adopted a more uniform and standardized evaluation system,” the Maharashtra commission said.

Similarly, the Maharashtra PSC has declared to exclude the optional subject from the state services main examination under Maharashtra Civil Services Gazetted, Group-A and Group-B, it added.

MPSC Main Exam Pattern: Existing and Revised versions

As per the revision, the MPSC has reduced the total written exam marks from 1,750 to 1,250 by removing two optional subject. Whereas, there is no change in the interview marks.
