Mumbai University Senate backs Yuva Sena memorandum over NEET protests, seeks action on students' demands

The Mumbai University (MU) Senate, during its meeting held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, accepted a memorandum from student representatives and Yuva Sena members who had written their support in this regard in connection with the student protest against alleged leak of NEET examination paper and reported suicides of 22 students. The memorandum also supported the demand for the resignation of the Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan.

The student representatives had asked the Vice Chancellor to extend institutional support to the students who were agitating for the nationwide movement which is ongoing in Delhi. They called upon the University authorities to join the students and take it up through the constitution.

The memorandum also sought chancellor of all universities of Maharashtra, Governor Shri Jishnu Dev Varma to write a letter to President Droupadi Murmu seeking the immediate dismissal of Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan. It said that the grievances of students of the MU and its affiliated colleges should be taken up with the President of the University through the Chancellor.

Resolution condemns police action passed

Other than the memorandum, a resolution condemning the alleged brutal lathi-charge and police action against the protesting students was moved by Yuva Sena member Shri Param Yadav. During the senate proceeding, it was seconded by the Minister of State Pradeep Sawant.

Members of both Yuva Sena and BUCTU supported this resolution which was then passed by the senate. The members termed the police action a "massacre" of students and demanded it be condemned in the official resolution.

Memorandum to be forwarded to Chancellor

The senate also accepted the memorandum submitted by the representatives of Yuva Sena and submitted it to the Chancellor and Governor for further consideration.

The memorandum, described as a tribute to Maharashtrians, restated the support to students involved in the nationwide protest against the NEET issue. It also called the university administration to consider the issues of students of MU and its affiliated colleges and came up with the idea of sending the memorandum to the president of India via the chancellor for action on the demands put forward by the students representatives of the university and its affiliated colleges.
