The action follows alleged lapses, including inadequate teaching staff, irregularities involving teaching and non-teaching personnel, and discrepancies in the functioning of the ayurveda medical colleges.

The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) has withheld recognition from 61 Ayurveda medical colleges across the country for the 2026-27 academic session, including 12 in Madhya Pradesh after the commission found alleged non-compliance with prescribed standards, TOI reported.
The recognition has been withdrawn from one college each in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, according to Rakesh Pandey, national spokesperson, Ayush Medical Association in the report.
The action follows alleged lapses, including refusal to permit inspections, deficiencies in inpatient and outpatient department (IPD and OPD) services, inadequate teaching staff, irregularities involving teaching and non-teaching personnel, and discrepancies in the functioning of colleges and their affiliated hospitals, the report added.
Pandey stated in the report that strict implementation of prescribed standards was essential to maintain the quality of Ayurveda education and healthcare services.
“The Union Ministry of Ayush and NCISM have taken action against institutions that allegedly failed to meet the required norms,” he said in the report.
The final decisions on the recognition of status of Ayurveda colleges in Madhya Pradesh and other states would be taken before the government-held admission counselling process concluded, the report read.
Over 600 Ayurveda medical colleges operate across the country, of which 494 have been granted recognition, Pandey mentioned in the report.
In September this year, the NCISM barred 457 teachers for one year across Ayurveda colleges in the country due to failure to comply with its directors.
The commission stated that 142 teachers in 10 Ayurveda institutes have been barred after records revealed individuals were appointed as teachers but weren't working.
Ayurveda teachers from Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat have been barred from their duties.
