Education ministry starts NEHU VC recruitment process after months of campus unrest

NEHU VC Recruitment 2026: Interested candidates can apply for the vice chancellor’s post through the official website at nehu.ac.in and education.gov.in by June 18 until 5 pm.
The Ministry of Education has opened the registration for the post of Vice-Chancellor (VC) of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU). The announcement for the new VC comes weeks after protests by students’ and teachers’, demanding removal of NEHU VC Prabha Shankar Shukla over alleged administrative and governance issues.
Interested candidates can apply for the NEHU’s vice chancellor’s post through the official website at nehu.ac.in and education.gov.in by June 18 until 5 pm.
Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla has remained largely away from the NEHU campus since proceeding on leave in November 2024 amid protests by students’ and teachers’ organisations demanding his removal over alleged administrative and governance issues.
The NEHU campus had remained in the headlines for months as protests intensified against Shukla’s leadership, with demonstrators accusing the administration of misgovernance and poor decision-making.

NEHU VC Appointment 2026: Eligibility, pay scale
As per the eligibility criteria, candidates looking forward to applying for the vice-chancellor’s post at North-Eastern Hill University , must possess the highest level of competence, integrity, morals and institutional commitment, according to an official notice.
Candidates should also be a distinguished academician, with at least 10 years’ experience as professor in a university or 10 years of experience in a reputed research or academic administrative organisation with proof of having demonstrated academic leadership, the notice reads.
“He or she should preferably not be more than 65 years of age as on the closing date of receipt of applications of this advertisement,” it added.
The vice-chancellor’s post at the North-Eastern Hill University carries a pay Rs 2.10 lakh (fixed) per month with special allowance of Rs 11,250 and other usual allowances.
“The terms and conditions of the services will be those as set forth in the Act, Statutes and Ordinances of the University,” it said.
As per the selection process, vice chancellor appointment will be made from a panel of names recommended by a committee constituted under the provisions of Act of the university.
