NIRF Ranking 2024: Categories and parameters of ranking

NIRF was launched in 2015 by the ministry of education to rank Indian universities and colleges based on objective criteria to promote competitive excellence. NIRF had in November 2022 announced the new category, agriculture and allied Sectors.

This year, three new categories have been included – state government-run institutions, open universities and skill universities. The ministry of education is also helping the institutions of the neighbouring countries to participate in the NIRF rankings, said Sanjay K Murthy, secretary, department of higher education, ministry of education. A total of 10,885 institutions across India applied for the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings 2024 this year.

While addressing the NIRF 2024 award ceremony, National Educational Technology Forum (NETF) chairman Anil Sahasrabuddhe said that officials are planning to introduce sustainability rankings from the next year. A preference is being given to zero carbon footprint, in which, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, has taken a lead, he said.

Besides introducing three new categories in the NIRF rankings, the education ministry has also made changes to the parameters used for determining the ranks of the institutes. The new parameters include sustainable development goals and indicators of National Education Policy (NEP) which includes Indian Knowledge System, adoption of regional languages and multiple entry and exit points

For the sixth time, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has bagged the top position in the overall category of NIRF 2024 India rankings. IIT Madras has remained in the top rank among engineering colleges since the inception of the ranking system. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has once again emerged as the top medical college in the country. Meanwhile, Jamia Hamdard has knocked NIPER Hyderabad out of top spot in pharmacy category of NIRF ranking 2024. IISc Bangalore has retained top spot in ‘university’ category.
