NIT Trichy BTechs will get direct entry into IIT Delhi PhD programme

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and National Institute of Technology Trichy have signed an agreement that will allow research and academic collaborations, including direct admission to PhD for qualified NITT BTech students.

The NIT Trichy BTech students with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 will be eligible for direct admission in PhD without GATE or any other national level entrance examination. In the regular mode, applicants have to qualify the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE, for admission to PhD. NIT Trichy’s BTech students will also carry out part of their studies including project work at IIT Delhi as per the agreement signed by IIT Delhi director V. Ramgopal Rao and Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, director, NIT Trichy.

The eligibility criteria is 8.00 CGPA at the end of their B.Tech third year will be eligible to apply for a project in summer and complete their fourth year seventh and eight semesters at IIT Delhi.

The students also demonstrate sufficient merit in coursework and research during the final year of the B.Tech to continue to join the Ph.D. programme.

This will also help B.Tech students to enhance their chances of qualifying for the prime minister's research fellowship or PMRF fellowship for Ph.D. at IIT Delhi.

IIT Delhi will not be charging any academic fees from the NIT Trichy students during their stay in Delhi and will also provide either on-campus or off-campus hostel accommodation for one-year.

Dr. Mini Shaji Thomas, director, NIT Trichy in a statement said: “The key feature of this MoU is the excellent opportunity for bright undergrad students for direct Ph.D. admission at IIT Delhi. We are very positive that this MoU will encourage academic partnerships and fruitful research collaborations between NITT and IIT Delhi. The Institute is looking forward to joint research projects and faculty exchange programmes.”

“V. Ramgopal Rao, director, IIT Delhi welcomed the MoU with NIT Trichy and termed it a good opportunity for the faculty and students of both the institutes to collaborate in the area of R&D,” said as per the statement.

Students and Faculty Exchange

The agreement also eases exchanges of BTech, dual degree MTech students, research scholars, and faculty members between the two institutes. The selection and nomination of students will be open throughout the academic year.

The students under the exchange programme will be classified as special exchange students and permitted to take courses as well as participate in research activities, internships, and project work.

The faculty of NIT Trichy can also apply for postdoctoral positions or any other opportunities available at IIT Delhi.

The faculty from both institutes will also collaborate in the joint submission of research project proposals, supervision of exchange students, and joint research in the disciplines of mutual interest.
