NMC Bill: IMA to submit alternative proposal

NEW DELHI, FEB 22: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has termed the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill to undemocratic. The Association is planning to submit an alternative proposal to the Union Government on the NMC Bill.

IMA has taken stand against one of the key provision of the bridge course which allows Ayush practitioners to dispense allopathic medicines after a course of six months.

IMA has planned a Nationwide YATRA involving all IMA activists in coming month to generate momentum. It is also holding meeting with all the stakeholders.

As per the IMA President, this is a Do or Die situation. He has alleged that in last few years doctors have been under constant attack from all quarters. “If we are successful in winning this war we will be able to re-establish the prestige & credibility of our profession, he said in a statement issues to all the members of the association.

The National Medical Commission Bill

The NMC Bill, 2017 seeks to establish the National Medical Commission (NMC) by repealing repeal the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. It was introduced by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, J. P. Nadda in Lok Sabha on December 29, 2017. The Bill seeks to provide for a medical education system which ensures: (i) availability of adequate and high quality medical professionals, (ii) adoption of the latest medical research by medical professionals, (iii) periodic assessment of medical institutions, and (iv) an effective grievance redressal mechanism.
