NMC refuses to renew UG, PG seats and cancels applications of new courses and seats in medical colleges following CBI investigation.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has blacklisted four senior doctors working as assessors for allegedly taking a bribe for a favourable assessment report to medical colleges. Additionally, the commission has denied renewal of seats and cancelled new courses and seats in undergraduate and postgraduate courses for six medical colleges.
The action has been taken following a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against the doctors, colleges, and private persons earlier this month.
“It is reiterated that the Commission views such matters very seriously and has decided to blacklist the said 04 Assessors, pending investigation and final verdict in the matter. It has been also decided that the renewal of the existing number of UG & PG seats of 06 medical colleges in Under-graduate and Post-graduate courses shall not be done for the AY 2025-26. Further, the application for increase of seats and starting of new courses for both UG & PG received by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board for AY 2025-26 from these colleges shall be cancelled and not processed further,” said NMC.

CBI bribe case
CBI filed the FIR in the starting of this month under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The matter is currently being investigated. The commission had earlier rejected the applications of a Karnataka private medical college for the very same reasons and blacklisted one senior doctor working as NMC assessor for taking a bribe of Rs 10 lakh for a positive inspection report.
While reiterating the action, NMC advised the medical colleges to conform strictly to the NMC rules and regulations and to uphold the ethos of quality medical education, professionalism and public trust.
Meanwhile, NMC has directed all medical colleges to set up a medical device-related adverse event committee for tracking and preventing adverse events associated with medical devices.
