Odisha schools have been advised to ensure an uninterrupted water supply, keep ORS on hand, and teach students heatwave precautions.
The Odisha School and Mass Education Department, on Saturday, issued detailed precautionary measures for all schools in the state, including government, aided, and private institutions, to cope with the expected heat wave conditions this summer.
The official order has directed schools to ensure an uninterrupted supply of drinking water, repair tube wells if needed, and keep sufficient ORS (oral rehydration solution) packets available for students and staff.
The advisory also instructs schools to limit outdoor activities to prevent students from being exposed to extreme heat and advises parents to make sure their children carry water bottles to school. Additionally, schools are advised to set aside time during class hours to teach students about heatwave safety tips.

The guidelines, sent to all district education officers and school directors, refer to a related advisory from the Special Relief Commissioner to ensure quick action across the state, according to the statement.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several cities in Odisha, including Paralakhemundi, recorded maximum temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius in January, and many cities are already seeing daytime temperatures above the normal for February, indicating an early onset of severe heat in the coming months.
Odisha has been experiencing high temperatures in recent years, and the state government has been taking steps to protect the health of children. In 2025, the heat was so severe that schools had to change their timings, and summer vacations had to start early.
