Tamil Nadu’s 184-year-old Pachaiyappa’s College gets co-educational status; opens admission to female students

The grant of co-educational status to Pachaiyappa’s College is a step towards inclusivity, equality, and the evolving educational aspirations of society, an official statement read.

The Tamil Nadu government has granted co-educational status to Chennai’s Pachaiyappa’s College. The long-pending move will open doors of 184 years old institutions to women students, creating better scope for quality higher education.

According to an official statement, the grant of co-educational status to Pachaiyappa’s College is a step towards inclusivity, equality, and the evolving educational aspirations of society.

“Pachaiyappa's College, one of India's oldest and most revered institutions of higher learning, has entered a historic new phase in its illustrious 184-year journey with the Government of Tamil Nadu issuing a Government Order (G.O.) granting the College Co-Educational Status,” the statement read.

Pachaipappa's College welcomes co-educational status

The move also aligns with current educational values while preserving the rich traditions and varied legacy of the college, it said.

“The Management, Principal, faculty members, non-teaching staff, students, alumni, and well-wishers of Pachaiyappa's College have welcomed the Government's decision with immense pride and gratitude,” it added.

Appreciating the government of Tamil Nadu and the department of higher education for recognising the aspirants of the college and granting the much-awaited approval, principal of Pachaiyappa’s College said: “ We are moving towards a new chapter, will remain committed to its mission of nurturing knowledge, virtue and leadership. The granting of unisex status is not just an administrative achievement; Rather, it is a historic event that will build a progressive future by upholding the legacy of this proud institution that has served the community well for two centuries.”
