JMI VC: The appointment follows the approval from the President of India Droupadi Murmu in her role as the university's Visitor.
NEW DELHI: Mohammad Shakeel has been appointed as the officiating Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) following approval from the President of India Droupadi Murmu in her role as the university's Visitor.
“Hon’ble President of India in her capacity as the Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in exercise of powers conferred upon her by the Act or Statutes of University has been pleased to approve the appointment of Prof. Mohammad Shakeel as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor as per Statute 2(6) of JMI Act, 1988,” the official notice stated.
Jamia Millia Islamia appointed Mohammad Shakeel as its Officiating Vice Chancellor on May 22, following a ruling by the Delhi High Court that invalidated Eqbal Hussain's appointment and instructed the university to appoint a new Vice Chancellor within one week.
Shakeel has obtained his BTech and MTech degrees from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh and subsequently obtained his PhD degree from University of Roorkee. He had joined JMI as Lecturer in November 1986 and he was subsequently promoted to the post of Reader and Professor in the year 1992 and 2000 respectively.
The Delhi High Court quashed the appointment of Eqbal Hussain as the Pro-Vice Chancellor and subsequently as Officiating Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, stating that these appointments did not adhere to the applicable statutory requirements.
Professor Eqbal Hussain had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court contesting the appointment of Professor Mohammad Shakeel to the position. Hussain's legal representative argued that the recent appointment of Professor Shakeel as the acting Vice Chancellor was unlawful and not based on proper procedures.
