QS Asia University Rankings 2021: Three IITs in top 50

NEW DELHI: The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has announced its Asia University Rankings 2021 Asia’s higher education institutions ranking. It compares 650 institutions from 18 locations across Asia. The ranking is based on the 11 key parameters including academic standing, graduate employability, research quality, web presence, internationalization on campus, and the diversity of each institution's international collaborations. Performance in these go on to decide an institution’s overall ranking.
The National University of Singapore secured the top institution position for the third consecutive year and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Bombay, Delhi and Madras are among in the top 50 institutions in the country.
Geographical distribution
A total of 650 institutions have been ranked in QS Asia University Rankings 2021. The most-represented location is Mainland China with 124 ranked universities, followed by India with 107; Japan, 105; South Korea, 88; Taiwan, 43; Pakistan, 40; Malaysia, 35; and Indonesia, 30.
Status of Indian institutions
Out of 650, only 107 institutions ranked are from India. And out of these 107, only 31 institutions feature in the top 250. There are 69 institutions in the ranking band from 251-600 and seven institutes are below 600. All top 10 Indian institutions are public institutions but only eight institutions feature in the top 100 of Asia. Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, located in Himachal Pradesh, is the top in the country and fourteenth in Asia in citations per paper -- higher than any IIT. Only five out of 107 Indian institutions have received four-start ratings and JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research is the top-ranked institution with a four-star rating. JSS Academy is in the 291-300 ranking band.

Ranking Methodology
The 11 indicators used to compile the QS Asia University Rankings and the corresponding weightages are academic reputation (30%); employer reputation (20%); faculty-student ratio (10%); international research network (10%); citations per paper (10%) and papers per faculty (5%); staff with a PhD (5%); proportion of international faculty (2.5%) and proportion of international students (2.5%); proportion of inbound exchange students (2.5%); and proportion of outbound exchange students (2.5%); These last two indicators, not used in the global ranking, offer additional insights into the efforts to internationalise universities in India and allows for the assessment of the relative sizes of each institution’s inbound and outbound student exchange programs.
