Rajya Sabha passes Central Sanskrit Universities Bill

NEW DELHI: The Central Sanskrit Universities Bill, 2019, was passed in the Rajya Sabha on March 16. The Bill which seeks to convert three existing Sanskrit teaching and research institutions into Central Universities and creates an avenue for new ones to come up had been passed in the Lok Sabha on December 12, 2019.

The three institutions that will immediately benefit are the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Delhi and the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. Run by societies, all three already enjoyed the status of “deemed-to-be universities”.

The minister for human resource development, BJP's Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said: “I am confident that after attaining the status of Central University, these three institutions will play an important role in the preservation, promotion and development of Sanskrit with a renewed faith, enthusiasm, energy and determination.”
