Shiv Nadar School students develop device to help people suffering from hand tremors

NEW DELHI: The students of Shiv Nadar School have developed a device called Dextrabot to deal with the issue of hand tremors. The user-friendly device was developed by a team of six students from Class 10. The school claims that the device will help people with shaking hands in daily activities by providing stability to the hands.

According to a statement from Shiv Nadar School, the Dextrabot is a gyroscopically stable robotic handle, to which things like spoons, forks, toothbrushes and others can be attached. The students of the Shiv Nadar School developed this device as part of the Capstone Project, which encourages students to come up with economically viable and creative solutions to address real-world problems.

"India has seven million elders afflicted with Parkinson’s and about 70 percent of patients start experiencing tremors within the early stages of the disease. People also suffer essential hand tremors due to nervous system disorder and strokes," said the statement.

The student team initially conducted an internal online survey, in which they found that 32.9 percent were suffering from the problem of hand tremors or knew someone who faced this issue. They further researched the problems faced by individuals with hand tremors. They took input from doctors and patients to make sure that the device can cater to the needs of the users. The team wishes to collaborate with NGOs and old-age homes to make the device available to such individuals.
