St. George’s University of Grenada, West Indies medical students who took the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) registered 96 percent pass rate.
The USMLE Step 1 is designed to measure basic science knowledge. The test consists of more than 300 multiple choice questions on topics ranging from the biology cells and human development to the central nervous, musculoskeletal and endocrine systems. Steps 2 and 3 measure medical clinical skills. A passing score on all three parts of the USMLE is required to practice medicine in the United States.
"This achievement illustrates the hard work and dedication of our students and I look forward to watching them go on to become practicing physicians in the US and around the world,” said Dr. G. Richard Olds, President, St. George's University. The students who took the exams posted an impressive score of 224. This is especially impressive considering they hailed from 49 countries across five continents.
In 2018, SGU saw 941 students and graduates secure residency placements – including 93% of eligible 2018 graduates who applied for and obtained a US residency at the time of graduation. In 2019, more than 950 students and graduates have secured residency placements with the list continuing to grow.
According to the latest MCI data, there has been an increased interest in studying medicine abroad with an 84% increase in the number of eligibility certificates issued to students to pursue international studies. St. George’s University has an MoU with Ramaiah Group of Institutions in Bangalore to bring the opportunities for study abroad to even more students from India.
