Supreme Court stays HC order to resume MP NEET PG counselling 2024 with revised state merit list

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has stayed the Madhya Pradesh High Court order to cancel the NEET PG state merit list published for the round 1 MP NEET PG counselling 2024. The high court had recently asked the state counselling committee to redo the round 1 merit list by adding incentive marks to normalised scores obtained by in-service candidates.

The Supreme Court order comes more than a week after the high court gave its nod to resume the MP NEET PG counselling 2024 after redoing the state merit list. Dr Abhishek Shukla, a NEET PG aspirant, like several others, approached the Jabalpur High Court in Madhya Pradesh seeking details on the normalisation method used for preparing the NEET PG results and state merit list.

The merit of the petitioners, who are in-service candidates of Madhya Pradesh, in the All India List is higher than some of the other in-service candidates but in the state list they have been shown lower in the merit. "We are questioning the scientific and legal validity of the formula used to prepare the MP state merit list, which resulted in many candidates who were placed higher on national list got lower ranks in the state list. We estimate around 300-400 candidates, including in-service aspirants, to have been impacted by it. The counselling shouldn't be done according to this list as it defies merit," Abhishek Shukla said.

After hearing the arguments, the high court ordered “The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences to prepare the State Merit List afresh by awarding the incentivised marks to the in-service candidates, not on their raw scores but on their normalised scores. The exercise be carried out as expeditiously as possible.”

However, the top court has stayed the high court order to resume MP NEET PG counselling 2024 based on the revised state merit list prepared by the NBEMS. More details awaited…
