Tamil Nadu government launches 9 textbooks with revised curriculum for Classes 1 to 3

The Tamil Nadu government has launched nine textbooks for Classes 1 to 3 with a revised curriculum focusing on child-centric and activity-based learning. The school education minister Rajmohan has directed to reopen all government, aided, and private schools for the 2026-27 academic year on June 1.

The revised curriculum in the book aims to improve students' learning outcomes, motor skills, socio-emotional development, values, and life skills.

The minister chaired a review meeting on May 18, 2026, with senior education officials, including additional chief secretary Dr Chandramohan B, IAS, and made the announcements.

Recently, the Tamil Nadu Governor approved the allocation of the newly-formed cabinet ministers under the leadership of chief minister C Joseph Vijay. In the education sector, Rajmohan has been appointed as the minister for school education, while KG Arunraj is the new minister for medical colleges in the state.

Tamil Nadu: Teacher training, school amenities

The minister also directed that all textbooks, notebooks, uniforms, and school bags should be ready for distribution on reopening day. Also, training on the new curriculum and teaching methods for teachers handling Classes 1 to 3 will be held from June 1 to 3.

According to the official TN press release, schools have also been instructed to ensure that campuses, classrooms, toilets, kitchens, drinking water facilities, smart boards, and Hi-Tech labs are cleaned, functional, and safe before schools are reopened.

Additionally, directives were issued on student safety, EMIS-based transfer certificates, and admissions for students moving to Classes 6 and 9.

Other officials, including school education commissioner Senthil Kumar, IAS, director of elementary education Kannammal, the director of public libraries Ilambagavath, and other department officers, participated in the event.
