Telangana reserves 100% MBBS seats for local students in government medical colleges

NEW DELHI: In a major announcement, the Telangana government has revised the rules of reservation for MBBS admission in Telangana government medical colleges. The state health minister Harish Rao Thanneeru also announced that the 900 seats of the 2,118 MBBS seats in government medical colleges in India for the academic year 2023-24 belong to Telangana.

As per the amendment to the Telangana State Medical Colleges Admission Rules made by the state government, 100% seats in the medical colleges established after June 2, 2014 will be reserved exclusively for Telangana students.

Previously, only 85% of the seats were reserved for local students, while the remaining 15% were for the unreserved, allowing students from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to compete. However, as per the revised rule, Telangana students will now have a greater chance.

In addition to enhancing super specialty services, the state chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao has taken the initiative to establish government medical colleges in each district, “with the aim of providing quality healthcare services and medical education to local students”, the state health ministry said.

The number of medical government colleges increased from 20 to 56 and the number of MBBS seats also risen significantly from 2,850 MBBS seats to 8,340 seats.

In April, the National Medical Commission (NMC) granted permission to six government medical colleges to start classes from the academic year 2023-24.
