TISS 85th Convocation 2026: 1,080 students graduate; 97 earn PhD degrees

TISS holds its 85th convocation in Mumbai; Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot addresses graduates, stresses discipline and social responsibility
The 85th annual convocation of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was held on April 18, 2026, at its Mumbai campus. A total of 1,080 students and scholars received their degrees at the ceremony.
The event was attended by the governor of Karnataka and chief guest Thaawarchand Gehlot, along with TISS chancellor DP Singh and vice-chancellor Badri Narayan Tiwari.
As per the TISS press note, 97 research scholars received PhD degrees, and one scholar was awarded an MPhil degree. A total of 982 students completed their Master’s degrees, BEd, BEd–MEd, and dual degree programmes.

TISS highlights NEP, social focus
Addressing the graduating students, chief guest Thaawarchand Gehlot congratulated them and said that discipline and hard work are important for their future careers. He also spoke about TISS’s role in producing professionals who work for social development and nation-building. He said that knowledge should be used for the benefit of society and stressed that the goal of Viksit Bharat can be achieved through inclusive development.
TISS chancellor DP Singh led the institute’s pledge and asked students to stay dedicated to serving people and society.
As per the TISS statement, vice-chancellor Badri Narayan Tiwari presented the annual report 2024–25 and spoke about the institute’s academic achievements in social sciences, public policy, and development studies. He also said that TISS is working to follow the National Education Policy (NEP) by improving teaching, research, and fieldwork.
The convocation was attended by senior officials such as Sunil Santha, dean (academic affairs), officiating registrar Narendra Mishra, deans, directors, faculty members, staff, alumni, and graduating students. The ceremony marked the end of the students’ academic journey, which focused on equality, social impact, and nation-building.
