Universities to set up academic chairs named after eminent Indian women

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities to send proposals to establish academic Chairs named after 10 eminent women from various fields such as literature, science and music.
The Chair will be fully funded by the Union Ministry of Women and child Development to engage in research and academic advancement of the university. Universities are required to submit their proposals within 21 days.
Popular Carnatic singer who was also awarded Bharat Ratna, Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi; Hindi poet and freedom fighter, Mahadevi Verma; eighteenth-century environmentalist Amrita Devi; Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, Queen of Maratha Malwa kingdom (18th century), are some of the women the chairs will be named after.
