UP: Class 10 Dalit student dies after being beaten by teacher over wrong answers in exam

NEW DELHI: A Class 10 Dalit student died in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya district after he was allegedly beaten by a teacher at school for writing wrong answers in the exam.

According to a complaint filed on September 24, the Superintendent of Police Auraiya, Charu Nigam, said, “Nikit, a Class 10 student of Adarsh Inter College Achhalda was beaten by his social science teacher, Ashwini Singh, for writing wrong answers in the exam on September 7."

He had been undergoing treatment in a hospital in Etawah district since September 7 and the teacher also helped the family financially. However, she refused to give money after learning that he was referred to Lucknow for treatment.

After nearly 20 days in hospital his condition deteriorated and was declared dead on September 26 morning, the police said.

After the news of his death, the teacher was not responding to calls, the police added. “Three teams have been formed for the search operation. The body has been sent for postmortem to determine the cause of death”. The police department said that the investigation regarding the matter is ongoing.

Based on the complaint, an FIR has also been registered against the teacher at Achhalda police station.

Condemning the incident, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, "For 19 days, the student kept fighting the battle between life and death, but the police could not catch the guilty person. This is not the first such incident. After all, instead of taking immediate action, the law and order of the government will work as a laxity?"
