WBJEE Result 2025 Delay: Thousands in limbo as OBC quota row derails West Bengal BTech admissions

WBJEE Result: Thousands of engineering aspirants remain in limbo as West Bengal struggles to declare results of its Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) at a time when the final round of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSSA) is over and even the counselling process for BTech admissions almost concluding nationwide.

The delay has particularly impacted the state's public engineering colleges, such as Jadavpur University, Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology (GCECT), and Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT), which rely solely on WBJEE for BTech admissions.

State education minister Bratya Basu had on June 11 announced that admissions would begin by June 19, but the ongoing legal proceedings over OBC reservation have derailed the timeline.

West Bengal has very few public engineering colleges admitting students for BTech courses through WBJEE. These include:

• Jadavpur University (Faculty of Engineering and Technology)
• Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology (GCECT)
• Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT)
• Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Serampore and Berhampore
• Cooch Behar Government Engineering College

With counselling stalled, all these colleges are unable to conclude their admissions.

WBJEE 2025: Delayed academic calender

The uncertainty over WBJEE 2025 results has forced institutions to reconsider their academic schedules. Earlier this year, Jadavpur University paused its undergraduate admissions over the OBC reservation issue and sought legal counsel, though outcomes remain unclear.

“We are trying our best. We have written to the university. Then the university requested the Joint Entrance Board to hasten the process to declare the result so that the counselling process can start, but nothing is happening,” said Partha Pratim Roy, general secretary of the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) .

“While BTech counselling processes have concluded across India, West Bengal remains stuck. We fear meritorious students will migrate to other states, leaving us with limited options,” Roy added.

The delayed academic calendar will push the semesters well beyond schedule, he said. “The semester which we were supposed to complete in December 2025 will now extend till March 2026.”

The Durga Puja vacations in September 2025 will add to the woes. “Classes are unlikely to commence before the Puja break, further compounding delays,” Roy said.

WBJEE and the OBC quota battle

The Calcutta High Court’s judgment last year did not validate OBC classifications implemented in West Bengal after 2010, effectively putting on hold the state’s 17% reservation plan. The court allowed continuation of the pre-2010 structure of 7% OBC quota, with the next hearing scheduled for July 31.

“They can easily go ahead with what was followed till 2010 for OBC reservation . This legal uncertainty is the primary reason behind the delay in WBJEE results.”

Meanwhile, private engineering colleges have reportedly begun blocking seats in exchange for money, leaving students from weaker economic backgrounds with no option.

“Private engineering colleges are blocking the seats in lieu of money. Those without financial resources must rely on merit-based admissions to institutes like Jadavpur University. These students are the real casualties of the delay,” said Roy.

Jadavpur University had also requested permission to start counselling on its own, but received no response. “They are tight-lipped on that too,” Roy added.

MAKAUT VC flooded with calls

Tapas Chakraborty, vice chancellor of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT ), confirmed the widespread anxiety. “Students are impatient now. We are all waiting for the result but we cannot do anything about it,” he said.

“I am getting so many calls from both parents and students. I ask them to be patient. As far as I know, I did not see anything similar before, this is strange.”

Chakraborty feels unless the government offers clear interim guidance or restores the pre-2010 reservation framework, the semester will be delayed and the credibility of technical education in Bengal will suffer.
