World Environment Day 2022: Universities, colleges celebrate, share initiatives

IIT Madras, BHU, Ambedkar Univerity Delhi and others observes Environment Day, shares a glimpse into their initiatives for a better environment.

NEW DELHI: Educational institutions across different states and Union Territories of India are celebrating World Environment Day 2022 today, June 5, 2022.

World Environment Day is organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It's being held annually since 1973 with participation from over 150 countries. World Environment Day engages governments, businesses, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities and communities. The objective of observing this day is to raise awareness and celebrate environmental action, says the UNEP website. The host country for World Environment Day 2022 is Sweden.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras shared a video on Twitter highlighting the initiatives undertaken by the institute and solutions it developed for a better environment. "Maintaining a green campus and contributing to carbon neutrality is a natural interest and a social responsibility for the @iitmadras community. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let's us take a look into a few initiatives undertaken and solutions deployed by #IITMadras institute," said a tweet from IIT Madras.

Students and faculties of Dr BR Ambedkar Univerity Delhi celebrated World Environment Day 2022 at the Dheerpur Wetlank project of the university. The university shared the pictures of the celebration on social media.

"5 June World Environment Day reminds people to give importance and respect to the environment. This #WorldEnvironmentDay2022 But let us pledge to promote the direction of creating a healthy environment" tweeted the vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Students of Barkatullah University, Bhopal have made seed balls by collecting seeds of different species aiming at aforestation to conserve nature. "Know on #WorldEnvironmentDay the unique initiative taken by the students of Barkatullah University, Bhopal for nature conservation. These students have made seed balls by collecting seeds of different species, from which plants will grow and greenery will increase in future," tweeted the department of higher education of Madhya Pradesh.
