100 more seats for medicine aspirants, RML to start MBBS course

NEW DELHI, JUNE 06: Aspiring undergraduate students of medicine have a reason to be happy. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi will be offering MBBS course from July 2019. Initially, to be started off with 100 seats, it will be upgraded to 150 with 50 more seats to be added soon.

Speaking to Careers360, Dr Rajeev Sood, Dean, PGIMER, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, said “As of now we are starting with 100 seats and subsequently we will upgrade to 150 because the economically weaker section quota is any time likely to be added. Ultimately we are aiming for 250 intakes when our full redevelopment of this 80-year-old hospital is done”.

Dr Sood further said that in all 100 medical colleges will be started and for that space has been identified, the consent of the ministry taken and also modalities are being formulated.

In RML, the college will start functioning in the PGI building complex itself, spaces will be added as and when the batch increases. The departments involved at the initial stage of the course are absolutely ready and they are the department of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine.

Faculty recruitment has been done and the institute is all ready to take admission for the July 2019 session informed Dr Sood. The increases in the number of doctors will definitely be beneficial which can be felt only after five years, he added.

Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, formerly known as Willingdon Hospital, was established by the British for their staff and had only 54 beds. Now the hospital has about 1420 beds, spread over in 30 acres of land.
