NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday urged the central government to cancel exams conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The chief minister said that the board can opt to evaluate students based on their internal assessment marks or through online exams.

Kejriwal said that these exam centres can turn out to be hotspots for the COVID-19 virus as infected cases continue to rise in the country.

Arvind Kejriwal, during a press conference, said: “More than six lakh students write the CBSE board exams and one lakh teachers participate in the evaluation process. These centres could become a hotspot. I appeal to the central government to cancel all CBSE exams. Students can be assessed through internal assessment or online exams. It is important to cancel cbse exams.”

Kejriwal said that Delhi witnessed 13,500 COVID-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours. The minister urged all people to strictly follow COVID-19 guidelines.

In the past few weeks, prominent political figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Aaditya Thackeray had urged the Centre to cancel CBSE board exams. Several states have already postponed board exams or cancelled exams for junior classes, opting to promote students on the basis of internal assessment. These include Maharashtra and Punjab.
