Bihar Cabinet clears BEd college upgrade, Rs 950 crore student credit card plan, kaushal yuva extention

The Bihar government has approved a series of measures focused on higher education, student financial support and skill development. Under one of the decisions, approval has been granted to transform and academically strengthen around 300 standalone teacher-education institutions offering BEd programmes into multidisciplinary degree colleges.

CM Choudhary announced that this move will allow students to pursue undergraduate and vocational courses in arts, science, commerce and other subjects alongside BEd programmes, on the same campus. It is expected to boost quality education, skill development, research and employment-focused education.

Apart from this, the state government has also approved strengthening of Bihar student credit card scheme for 2026-31 and its extension for another five years. A budget of Rs 950 crore has been approved for the scheme in 2026-27, Choudhary shared in a post on X.

Post further highlights that more than 4.81 lakh applications have been approved under the Bihar Student Credit Card Scheme, while financial assistance of around Rs 8,865 crore has been provided to more than 4.15 lakh students. This is expected to help in removing financial barriers to higher education and provide students with better opportunities.

Kushal Yuva Programme

Kushal Yuva Programme will be extended from 2026-27 to 2030-31 under Saat Nischay-3 with Rs 430.08 crore budget. Young people will receive training in emerging and employment-oriented skills, including artificial intelligence (AI), drones, solar technology, networking, digital marketing, banking, telecom, foreign languages and entrepreneurship.

The programme will create 6,436 employment opportunities and train more than 2.57 lakh young people every year. All the decisions focus on expanding academic opportunities, improving access to financial assistance for higher education and equipping Bihar's youth with skills linked to upcoming employment opportunities.
