Birkbeck University, London, gets approval for Bengaluru campus; offers business management, analytics courses

The government has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the University of London to establish its campus in Bengaluru, marking a significant step towards “Internationalisation at Home” vision under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020).

Vineet Joshi, secretary, department of higher education, Ministry of Education, handed over the LoI to Sally Wheler, vice-chancellor of Birkbeck, University of London, in New Delhi today.

The University of London’s Bengaluru campus will offer fees nearly 60% lower than its London campus, according to a report by India Today.

Foreign university campuses in India

“This is the 15th LoI issued to a foreign university to establish a campus in India under the UGC Regulations 2023,” the Ministry of Education said on its official X account.

The 200-year-old United Kingdom-based Birkbeck, University of London, will offer programmes in business management and analytics, the education ministry said.

The courses will boost the government’s study in India initiative and “reaffirm education as a key bilateral pillar in the India-UK relationship as envisioned in Leaders’ statement issued in October 2025, and thereby contribute to the vision of #ViksitBharat,” it added.

Lindy Cameron CB OBE, British High Commissioner, Alison Barrett MBE, director India, British Council, along with senior officials from the Education Ministry, University Grants Commission (UGC) and media took part in the handing over ceremony.

Recently, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Guwahati) provided LoI to 22 institutions to establish Northeast India-Japan international academic and research consortium.
