NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has agreed to retain the ‘pass’ result of Class 12 improvement exam conducted in August. The decision came after the Supreme Court urged the CBSE to reconsider its decision to treat the marks in the Class 12 improvement exams in which students were declared ‘failed’ or secured less marks scored under the CBSE assessment criteria.

The bench comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar pointed out that the students are only seeking for retention of their original marks and that the admissions taken by them will be affected if improvement scores are considered, the Live Law reported.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the CBSE had devised an alternate assessment criteria last year to evaluate the Class 10 and 12 students. CBSE conducted the CBSE compartment and improvement exams 2021 for Class 10 and 12 from August 28 to September 8, 2021.
CBSE Class 10 and 12 regular students who were not satisfied with new assessment criteria appeared for the improvement exam in August.
In addition, private candidates who failed in the CBSE Class 10 and 12, students who applied for improvement, second chance compartment (2019), second chance compartment (2020) and private special cases also appeared for the CBSE compartment examination 2021.

In a recent notice, the CBSE announced that the students who appeared in CBSE Board exam 2020 and could not clear the compartment exam will be allowed to appear as private candidates for compartment exams along with CBSE Class 10, 12 term 2 board exams 2022.
