NEW DELHI: With a decrease in the Covid-19 cases around the country, several state governments have started exploring options to reopen colleges and universities for physical classroom education. The colleges in India by and large, are shut from the month of March, last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While few states reopened their colleges and universities and resumed physical classes for some duration of time, the second wave of Covid-19 forced them to call off their decision and put them in the cold box. The state of Telangana first decided to reopen the colleges from July 1, but the decision was later scrapped by the government. Now that states like Telangana and Karnataka have started vaccination drives for the students and college staff, the student's fraternity is asking a question “When will colleges reopen in India”

The Bihar government has reopened the colleges and other educational institutions from July 12, onwards. Gujarat will reopen the colleges and universities for the students with 50% attendance. The offline classes will however remain as a choice and there is no compulsion. Haryana will allow students to come to colleges and other educational institutions to clear their doubts from July 16, provided that they bring written permission from their parents or guardians. The union territory of Puducherry is also all set to reopen the colleges from July 16.

The deputy chief minister of Karnataka, CN Ashwath Narayan has announced that colleges will be reopened soon after vaccinating the students, teachers and college staff. The Chandigarh administration is looking ahead to resume physical classes in colleges from next month.

Pune: Students, teachers demand reopening of colleges

The students and teaching staff in Pune are demanding to reopen the colleges for practical sessions of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Pune Metropolitan Region PMR) have also pointed towards the reopening of colleges after the PMR sero survey findings. The samples revealed 70% SARS-COV-2 antibodies in urban areas of Pune.

"In the first phase, all final year students, at least in science stream, must be allowed to attend the practicals. These students did not do most practicals even last year, hence practicals of both years can be conducted for them," said Rajendra Zunjarrao, principal of Modern College of Arts, Science and Commerce in the report by Times of India .

Telangana colleges reopening news

The Telangana government is planning to reopen colleges and universities from August 16 in a phased manner, as per the report by Deccan Chronicle . Earlier, the state government announced the reopening of colleges and other educational institutions from July 1, which later got postponed due to the strong resentment amongst parents for the safety of their wards.

When will colleges reopen in Uttarakhand?

The Uttarakhand government has extended the Covid-19 curfew till July 27. The colleges and other educational institutions will remain closed. Earlier, the education minister of Uttarakhand, Dhan Singh Rawat announced that the colleges will reopen soon in the district where Covid-19 cases are fewer. Gauhati University exam updates

The Gauhati University has cancelled the GU exams for third-semester students. The exams for the sixth semester will be held in the month of August. The exams will be held in online mode.

"The 3rd-semester examination already scheduled for UG courses is hereby cancelled. The students will be promoted as done in the earlier semester as per the said UGC guidelines," reads the official notification in Gauhati University's website.

The Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) serosurvey done on the students belonging to age 6 to 18 years suggests that the schools and colleges in the urban areas of PMR can reopen safely, as per the report by the Times of India . Karnataka college reopening date announced

The Karnataka government has announced that all the colleges and other educational institutions will reopen from July 26. Only the students and academic staff who have vaccinated themselves will be allowed to attend the physical classes in the college. Earlier, the government announced the reopening of medical and dental colleges in the state with immediate effect. UGC releases academic calendar for 2021-22

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the new academic calendar for the 2021-22 session and guidelines for higher educational institutes and universities. The colleges are asked to finish the UG and PG admissions by September 30. The new classes shall begin by October 1. In case of any delay in the state board exams result, the new batch can begin by October 18. The examinations for intermediate and final semesters shall be over by August 31, as per the new UGC academic calendar.
