NEW DELHI: Kerala has decided to offer insurance cover and discounted flight tickets to its students who are studying abroad or plan to do so in the wake of the COVID-19 situation.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters in state capital Thiruvananthapuram that the students should register for the ‘Pravasi ID card’ to avail of these facilities.
“The overseas student registration service would enable them to get insurance benefits and discounts on flight tickets. This registration will be mandatory for all students presently studying abroad as well as for those going abroad, from now on,” Vijayan said on April 8.
The Pravasi ID card is a one-stop facility for non-resident Keralites to connect with the state government.
Currently, registration for the Pravasi ID card is only available for the Malayali expatriates residing or working abroad for a minimum period of six months.
Those who hold the Pravasi ID card can avail of online medical services administered through Norka Roots, a dedicated website for non-resident Keralites, Vijayan added.
The multi-purpose photo identity card entitles non-resident Keralite to avail of services and facilities offered by Norka Root. The card also comes with personal accident insurance coverage. Two prominent airlines are offering a discount on the base fare for Norka ID card holders.
