Coronavirus: In reaction to the sharp increase in COVID cases, JNU has constituted a COVID response team.
NEW DELHI: The second wave of coronavirus has hit Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) which reported over 300 cases since March last year in an official statement issued on Sunday. Currently, there are 74 active cases on JNU campus.
“As per available information, more than 332 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in JNU campus since March 2020 and presently there are 74 COVID-19 positive cases in JNU,” the statement said. A large number of students had left the campus last year after the first wave of coronavirus had hit the country. There are over 8,500 students studying in JNU.
Amid the alarming rise of coronavirus cases, the university has constituted a COVID-19 response team to assure the wellbeing of students and campus residents. The COVID response team will constitute nine members including the registrar as its chairman.
Students and campus residents can contact the response team through email at response.covid19@jnu.ac.in . The response team can also be reached through a dedicated helpline number.
Earlier, the JNU administration had advised its hostel residents to return to their native places if feasible. Canteens and dhabas on campus have been shut down to avoid gathering crowds. JNU said that hostel messes and eateries, and the library "may be the super spreaders." Apart from restricting movements inside the campus, the university has also closed the sports stadium .
