Delhi University establishes Centre for Himalayan Studies

NEW DELHI: University of Delhi ( DU ) has established a new Centre for Himalayan Studies in collaboration with Centre for Himalayan and Trans Himalayan Studies, University of Ladakh to conduct research and development on all aspects of Himalayas. The university will also set up a Himalayan Museum, said a statement from Delhi University.

The new Himalayan Centre has been developed by Delhi University to make efforts in saving the Himalayas which are under crisis. Landslides, cloud bursts, and unusual floods have become common in the last few years. As a result, people residing in the different regions of Himalayas are facing struggles, as per the statement.

“P C Joshi, vice chancellor of University of Delhi gave a clarion call to people across the country to join hands to save the Himalayas. Joshi said University of Delhi is concerned and serious about the issues of Himalayas,” the DU statement said.

DU Himalayan Centre

Dinabandhu Sahoo, founder director of Centre for Himalayan Studies, University of Delhi said: “We need to protect and preserve the Himalayan bio-resources as well as the unique culture of the region. Himalayan Centre will work in collaboration with various national and international organizations as well as with the people at the grass root level in different Himalayan states.”

Anil Prakash Joshi, who is an environmentalist, talked about the Himalayan crisis while addressing several people from across the nation in a webinar entitled “Himalayan Future: Beyond 2050”.

Sonam Wangchuk, engineer and innovator of artificial glaciers in Ladakh agreed with Anil Joshi and said that in the coming years, we will have to defend against climate change rather than any other army or country. Both Joshi and Wangchuk appreciated the university’s efforts to set up a centre dedicated to Himalayan studies and offered all possible help.

Recently, the Delhi University signed an agreement with the University of Ladakh.
