Delhi University, NCHHD sign pact for cooperation in research between India, Africa

NEW DELHI: The University of Delhi and the National Council for Handloom and Handicraft Development (NCHHD) Delhi have signed an agreement to promote cooperation in the research activities in the area of trade and commerce, textile and cotton industries among the African countries. The agreement was signed on August 28.
The event was attended by Yogesh Singh, vice chancellor; Vikas Gupta, registrar; Gajendra Singh, head department of African Studies, faculty of social sciences, University of Delhi and V P Thakur, executive director, NCHHD along with Surendra Kumar and Pardeep Yadav, project officer, NCHHD.
According to the university, the partnership will help in improving the lives of the artisans in the handicrafts sector in India and South Africa. The university with NCHHD will study the handicrafts activities, socio economic status, problems, and challenges of the local artisans and will accordingly form the marketing strategies, carry out protection, preservation and promotion of traditional art and craft in both the countries as per DU.

The DU vice chancellor Yogesh Singh said, “ This MoU will be mutually beneficial for both the University of Delhi and the National Council for Handloom and Handicraft Development (NCHHD). NCHHD assists grassroots organizations, NGOs, self-help groups, and small entrepreneurs engaged in Handicrafts for capacity building, livelihood generation & market promotion. The main aim and objective of the council is not only to create tangible assets but also to generate ideas, enhance the social and economic profile of the artisans and marginalized communities and provide a base of holistic welfare of the concerned region.”
“ MoU is signed for the betterment of the artisans in the Handicrafts Sector in India and South Africa to study the handicrafts activities, socio Economic status, problems, and challenges, marketing strategies, protection/preservation and promotion of traditional art and craft, etc. in both the countries” the DU vice-chancellor further added.
