Delhi University: Student organisations to hold protest against FYUP, fee hike

NEW DELHI: Student organisations will be carrying out a protest demonstration against the Delhi University academic council's decision to pass undergraduate courses in four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUP), fee hike and other issues tomorrow, August 3 at gate number one, the vice-chancellor's office. The demonstration is being organised by various student organisations such as the SFI, KYS, AIDSO, AISF, AISA, DSF, BSCEM, CTF, DISHA etc. The protest will take place from 10 am to 11:30 am.

The Delhi University academic council is meeting on August 3 to discuss the syllabi for the first semester of FYUP. The protestors have urged to reject the hurried exercise by Delhi University to dilute degrees, job loss for teachers, passing the syllabi only for the first semester papers, and the blanket authorisation to the vice-chancellor to notify modifications in syllabi, coursework, and examination. The protesting organisations say that the decision is "un-academic", and over 70,000 students in DU will suffer due to these decisions by the DU academic council.

According to a recent letter sent by the Delhi University statutory body members, the DU academic council had approved the UGCF-2022 in the month of February, as formulated by a National Education Policy cell. According to them, a rigorous exercise including the teachers of various colleges has to be held while framing the syllabus to make sure that the students receive the best academic knowledge as per the UG degree they opt for.

DU plans to implement the new curriculum from the academic year 2022-23 itself. As many as 100 undergraduate course syllabi will come up for discussion during the DU academic council meeting. Delhi university had previously implemented the FYUP in 2013, but it got scrapped by the Union government then.
