NEW DELHI: The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University has addressed allegations of mismanagement and unrest following the suicide of a Nepali female student in early February. The KIIT University claims that a 'defamation campaign' is being carried out against the university, its affiliated Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), and its founder. As per KIIT certain media and individuals are using the tragedy to spread false narratives, harming its reputation.
KIIT claims that media, individuals, and organizations are working to damage the university's reputation, alleging a deliberate effort to defame it. "This is no longer a matter of justice-it is a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of KIIT, KISS, and its Founder,'' said KIIT
In an official statement, KIIT highlighted contributions to education and social impact. It highlighted its special consultative status with the UN ECOSOC, its role in hosting international events like Youth 20 during the G20 Summit, and its numerous national and international recognitions. The university asserts that the ongoing defamatory campaign could affect its global partnerships and Odisha’s growth.
The KIIT said, “If this campaign continues unchecked, it could damage not just the university, but the broader economic growth and international collaborations that are vital to Odisha's future.” The KIIT said that it has acted ‘transparently’ and ‘responsibly’ in addressing the situation. KIIT urges an end to misinformation and calls for support in restoring peace and stability. KIIT states that justice should take its course while normalcy is restored in the institution.
KIIT states, “It is time to let peace prevail. Justice must take its course, and normalcy must be restored for the sake of the students, the institution, and the greater good. KIIT has always stood as a beacon of education, progress, and global recognition. Let us not allow misinformation and misguided outrage to destroy something that has contributed immeasurably to Odisha and India's progress.”
KIIT University’s student death
A Nepali female student at KIIT University died by suicide in early February in the university’s girls' hostel. The university reported that she had a personal relationship with another student, which may have contributed to her decision. KIIT claims that authorities ‘swiftly’ handed over the case to the police, leading to the detention of the male student who was involved.
Following the incident, Nepali students at KIIT gathered in protest on the main road, expressing their distress. KIIT claims that the situation escalated due to the circulation of ‘rumors’ on social media. As per KIIT, university authorities engaged in discussions and counseling sessions for over 10 hours, but some protesters remained ‘unresponsive’, causing disruptions and blocking public roads.
KIIT removes officers and apologises to Nepali students
As per KIIT, the university in coordination with Bhubaneswar police, acted ‘swiftly’ to prevent further escalation. Amid controversy over the alleged mistreatment of protesting Nepali students following a BTech student's death, KIIT fired two officers for their conduct toward international students and issued an apology . As per KIIT, the university identified staff members who mishandled the situation and removed them from service.
“We are extremely appalled by the untoward incident that took place in our campus on the evening of 16th February 2025. We are also regretful of the way some of us behaved with the agitating students. We love our students and had never done any disservice to them. The comments made by two of our officers are extremely irresponsible. Although the comments are made on their personal capacity on the spur of the moment, we do not support their action. We have removed them from service. They too have apologized for their behavior. We too apologize for all that has happened and hereby tender our love and affection to all the students and people of Nepal,” said KIIT VC in a letter of apology shared on their official page on X.
KIIT: Temporary suspension and return of students
According to KIIT , Nepali students were advised to return to their homes until the investigation was complete. However, after receiving advice from various authorities, including the government, KIIT withdrew this suspension and urged students to return to campus .
The KIIT’s official statement read “To prevent any further untoward incidents and ensure a smooth and unbiased investigation, Nepali students were advised to return to their respective places voluntarily with the help of local guardians until the local inquiry is completed. This step was taken purely in the interest of maintaining peace and ensuring justice is served appropriately.” More than 400 Nepali students have returned to KIIT, due satisfaction with the university’s response and safety measures, claims KIIT.
